Dr. Thorsten Barnickel is a graduate biologist, bio-informatics specialist as well patent attorney and legal representative for the European Patent Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Dr. Thorsten Barnickel studied biology with an emphasis on molecular biology and biochemistry at the universities of Regensburg and Heidelberg (Germany). He received his Master of Bio-informatics at the TFH Berlin (Germany) in the context of a bio-informatics preparatory course. He wrote his master's thesis for Schering AG. During his subsequent doctorate at the Helmholtz Zentrum München/TU Munich, he worked on semantic search, data integration and database scaling. During his doctorate he received a training as patent counsel. Through collaboration in book and IT projects, Dr. Barnickel gained experience in several companies (among others Wiley-VCH, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG).
